In 2024, Hive Public Space kicked off a multi-year partnership with the Active Design Program at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, exploring how the spaces where we live, work, and play can shape our physical, mental, and social health. Public spaces in Brownsville, Brooklyn were identified as potential sites for Active Design projects.
A series of uplifting community events / projects dedicated to well-being, creativity, and connection—hosted at three key neighborhood public spaces in Brownsville.

"Ribbon" was a collaborative installation designed with The Urban Conga—a transformative communal platform inviting people to connect, reflect, and share their unique experiences of Long Island City.
Each unit featured kinetic elements that can be moved and repositioned, changing the way light and reflections interact with the surrounding environment. As the pieces shift, they reveal hidden LIC Love Notes—personal messages written by residents and visitors that celebrate the spirit of the neighborhood.
Winding through pedestrian pathways and public spaces, Ribbon becomes a playful intervention—framing everyday moments and encouraging people to see Long Island City through a new lens.

In "Floral Festivity" the fiery florals and colorful flowing shapes that are depicted in this mural invite the surrounding Long Island City community to a bombastic respite of organic creativity, within LIC’s predominantly glass and steel architectural landscape.
The handpainted graphic motifs are playful, fun, joyous, and bursting with delightful dynamic color.

This colorful and dynamic intertwining pattern represents the people of Queens, the most ethnically diverse urban area in the world. The phrase, “We Are the World” is translated within the design into some of Queens’ most commonly spoken languages.
