Brownsville Placemaking Curriculum
Brownsville, BK | Summer 2024
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene
In the summer of 2024, Hive Public Space collaborated with the Brownsville Community Justice Center to develop a Placemaking Curriculum to deploy with the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP), the nation’s largest youth employment initiative. The program connects New York City youth ages 14-24 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experience each summer.
Through this collaboration, we engaged Brownsville youth in conversations about what matters most in their neighborhood and invited them to imagine the future of their public spaces.
We also supported two youth-led activations in the space. The first was a Talent Show that celebrated creativity and self-expression. The second and final activation marked the program graduation, bringing together participants, families, and community members to recognize the youth’s work and leadership.
