New Jersey Greenway
New Jersey | 2023 - 2024
New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Spanning 9 miles from Jersey City to Montclair, this transformative project reimagines a former rail line into New Jersey’s first new state park since 2006.
Led by the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, the Greenway is set to become a dynamic recreational, ecological, and transportation corridor—connecting neighborhoods across two of the most densely populated counties in the country.
Hive Public Space conducted a robust and inclusive community engagement process to shape a shared, equitable vision for the future park. Through multilingual outreach in each of the communities the Greenway connects, and a series of creative on-the-ground workshops, we gathered ideas and feedback to ensure the Greenway reflects the voices, needs, and dreams of residents across Hudson and Essex Counties. A one-day onsite activation (trail test) at a future activity hub demonstrated ideas of relaxation, gathering, play and transit, and invited community members to experience the future potential of the Greenway.

Greenway Summer - Pop-up Garden
The Greenway Summer Pop-Up Garden offered a glimpse into the future of the Greenway—temporarily transforming the space into a welcoming community hub that inspired connection, learning, and local stewardship.
Hive Public Space developed the strategy and implementation of this temporary activation, designed to demonstrate the power of community partnerships and shared care for public space.
Our team collaborated with and compensated Operation Grow, a local nonprofit dedicated to uplifting underserved and at-risk communities through human, social, economic, and environmental sustainability.
As stewards of the garden, Operation Grow nurtured the space and organized vibrant programming—from hands-on activities to educational workshops—that brought neighbors together and activated the Greenway with joy, care, and purpose.
