Bus Design Lead: Territorial Empathy

The People’s Bus is a retired prison bus formerly used to transport people detained on Rikers Island. It has been transformed with input from New Yorkers into a community center on wheels, with the purpose of engaging people in NYC’s civic life through beauty and joy.

The Sistine Chapel ceiling inside the People's Bus is made out of 8.8 million recycled beads from Materials for the Arts - They symbolize each resident of New York City.
The breathtaking artwork was created by the talented Mujeres en Movimiento who promote joy and healing by sharing crafts from their native “pueblos”. The design was inspired by drawings from New Yorkers that shared their vision of what the Bus should look like during the Peoples Bus - Rank Choice Voting Tour.
